A common first challenge for young children is learning to add simple numbers, which is often referred to by classroom teachers as “basic facts.” Basic facts refer to facts with single-digit numbers such as 2 + 3 or 8 + 7. This post will empower you to support your child’s success with developing a meaningful understanding of addition and learning basic addition facts.
Why Memorization Isn’t Enough for Learning Addition
When it comes to helping our children master basic math skills, it’s easy to fall into the habit of relying on memorization. Flashcards and repetitive drilling can seem like the easiest way to teach addition, but is it really the most effective approach? If you've ever felt that memorization alone didn’t work for you or your child, or you found this approach to be stressful and anxiety producing, you're not alone. So. Many. People. Moving Beyond Flashcards: How to Teach Addition Meaningfully
While flashcards might help with rote memorization, they don’t provide the deeper understanding of math concepts that children need to succeed in the long term. Some kids can memorize addition facts with ease, but for others, trying to just memorize doesn’t seem to work. So how can we help our kids not only learn how to add, but to also love math?
Tip 1: Helping Kids Understand What Addition Means
Our first tip is to help children understand that addition is about joining or combining two or more groups. This might seem obvious to adults, but when kids are asked to jump right into written addition problems or focus only on memorizing facts, this important concept can get lost.
Using Everyday Scenarios to Teach Addition
One of the best ways to reinforce the meaning of addition is by talking about it in real-life scenarios. For example, say you’re playing legos with your child. Hand them four legos, then say, “I’m going to give you two more. How many do you have now?” Let them count and physically interact with the legos. This way, they can see and experience that adding four and two gives them six.
You can do this strategy wherever you are with whatever is around! For example, if you’re waiting for your food at a restaurant, you can use napkins, forks, or sugar packets. Start by giving them a few items and ask them to count how many they have. Then give them more and ask how many they have now. Encourage your child to physically combine the groups so they can visualize the addition.
Teaching Addition with Physical Objects
Even if your child brings home flashcards or worksheets filled with addition problems, you can still help them understand the concept using physical objects. Use Legos, dried beans, or any other small items. Set up the problem with these objects so they can physically see and manipulate the numbers. You can also have them draw circles or other simple shapes to represent the numbers and help them make the connection between the concrete and the abstract.

Questions to Ask During Everyday Activities
How many [objects] do you have now?
(After adding a few more to the group)
What happens when we put these two groups together?
(Encourage them to combine the objects physically)
Can you show me how you got that answer?
(Ask them to explain their thinking process)
If I gave you one more [object], how many would you have then?
What if you took one (or two) away—how many would be left?
(To introduce subtraction as well)
Questions to Encourage Deeper Thinking:
How do you know that’s the right answer?
Can you think of another way to figure it out?
(Encouraging them to solve the problem differently, such as using drawings)
If you started with a different number, what would happen?
Can you show me what adding these looks like in a drawing?
Questions to Help Kids Make Connections:
How does this problem remind you of the [other situation] we did earlier?
What’s happening in this addition problem, and how is it like adding real objects together?
Can you think of another time when you might need to add things together?
(Helping them see the relevance of addition in everyday life)
